Back in October 2018, we revealed local pricing for the new Mercedes-AMG G63. Now the flagship performance version of the Geländewagen has officially touched down on local shores.

As we’ve already reported, the angriest version of the G-Class (incidentally, the only one available locally at launch) is priced from R2 591 000, before CO2 emissions tax (which is likely to add another R22 500 or so, depending on the selected tyre size). A six-year/100 000 km maintenance plan is included in the price.

Opting for the “Edition 1” variant adds another R300 000, and brings with it items such as 22-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels, AMG sports stripes, carbon-fibre trim in red pepper, AMG Exclusive Nappa leather, red top-stitching, red seat belts and the AMG Night package.

As a reminder, the new G63 (which we’ve driven in France) drops the 5,5-litre V8 of the previous-generation model for a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 worth a whopping 430 kW and 850 N.m. The result is a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,5 seconds, with a top speed of 220 km/h (or 240 km/h with the optional R49 500 AMG Driver’s package selected).

The AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission is employed by the new G63, complete with model-specific software for “very short shift times”. The all-wheel-drive system, meanwhile, features rear-biased torque distribution with a front to rear split of 40 to 60 (in the previous-generation G63, the distribution was a neutral 50:50).

Local customers will have a choice of eleven new exterior paint finishes for a total of 24 paint colours (two of which are flat, nine metallic and 13 “designo”).
