JOHANNESBURG – The Moerane Commission of Inquiry will this week submit its report on political murders in KwaZulu-Natal.

The document will be submitted to Premier Willies Mchunu.

Political analyst Karima Brown said there were a number of reasons for the killings.

She said the intimidation of witnesses and complicit law enforcement personnel are a big problem in these murders.

Red alert?

The National Freedom Party on Monday said it wanted authorities in the province to declare a state of emergency.

This followed the killing of Okhahlamb regional chairperson Nkeni Mabaso, who was also the deputy chairperson of the Vulindlela Taxi Association.

Mabaso was gunned down on Saturday afternoon near Bergville.

The NFP called for harsh sentences to be imposed on those involved in politically-motivated killings.

It further called for the army to be deployed to the province to deal with violence ahead of the 2019 general elections.
