The Zimbabwe Congress of Students’ Union (ZICOSU) has responded to the alleged abductions on MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa, saying it was a staged drama by the troubled opposition party to seek relevance.
Nelson Chamisa was reported to have escaped a dramatic abduction attempt by suspected state security agents near Mabvuku, Harare when the MDC convoy was reportedly blocked while he was returning from a party rally in Marondera.
A video footage went viral on media platforms where men who were called “Zanu PF CIOs” by the recorder are seen harassed by Chamisa and his bodyguards.
During an interview with Mail and Telegraph, ZICOSU spokesperson Sympathy Pasipanodya said the allegations were all bogus and funny.
“I laughed with my friends when we watched the video. If you have seen Tendai Biti on television or heard him talk on radio, you can, with no doubt know that he was the man with the voice which is overheard on the footage.
If the abductions were really true do you think Biti was going to step aside while his President was being abducted? We know how those guys love their president and they can’t just watch it happen. It was a poorly staged drama which shows hard times for a desperate man,” Pasipanodya said.
Pasipanodya also denied the belief by most Zimbabweans that ZICOSU is a Zanu PF union but an independent union which shares the same ideology with the ruling party.
“ZICOSU is not Zanu PF as most of the people think. We are a union which is independent. What we share with Zanu PF is the ideology. Unike ZINASU which now identifies itself with the MDC party after adopting the Chisa Mbama Chisa slogans, we stick to Ahoi UBA and Ahoi USA slogans because we represent the students not the party,”
