Six mineworkers were still trapped underground at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Masakhane Mine in Westonaria on Friday morning the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.
Spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said the union “can confirm that five miners were rescued, two deceased and six are still trapped underground at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Masakhane Shaft in Westonaria”.
In a terse early morning statement, NUM said it was “deeply worried and concerned”.
On Thursday mine management said 13 miners were trapped underground after a seismic incident. One miner died while being brought to the surface.
“The NUM is angry and concerned at the rate at which mining incidents are happening at Sibanye Stillwater,” said Mammburu.
“We send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased mineworkers during this difficult time. May their souls rest in peace.”
